How to Optimize Panel Cutting
Layout strategies to reduce waste and speed up cutting on your panel saw.
Cut in order
Cut the longest parts first. Sorting by size descending means fewer blade changes and smaller offcuts.
Use full-width rows
A panel saw cuts straight across the sheet. Keep each row full across the width before opening a new row.
Allow rotation
Most rectangular parts can flip 90° without downside. Always check grain direction on visible panels.
Count the kerf
A 3 mm kerf across 20 cuts wastes 60 mm. Add kerf to your mental math on every layout.
Practical tips
- Reserve large pieces for parts that must be one piece (tops, sides).
- Place defects in the waste zone if possible.
- Batch parts of similar size to reduce blade changes.
