Density table (approx., at 12% MC)

Species Density (kg/m³) Feel
Balsa 160 Very light
Pine 520 Light
Plywood 620 Light–medium
Walnut 640 Medium
Beech 690 Medium–hard
Maple 710 Hard
Oak 720 Hard
MDF 760 Heavy panel
Melamine 780 Heavy panel

Weight of a board

Weight (kg) = length × width × thickness (m) × density

A 2 × 0.2 × 0.05 m oak board (720 kg/m³):

Weight = 2 × 0.2 × 0.05 × 720 = 14.4 kg

Why density matters

  • Strength and weight usually track density — denser wood is stiffer.
  • Shipping cost scales with weight.
  • Denser woods need bigger pilot holes and sharper blades.

Practical tips

  • Density changes with moisture: a board at 20% MC weighs more than at 8%.
  • The table is approximate — regional and growth-rate variation is normal.
