How to Prevent Shelf Sag
The beam-deflection math behind shelf thickness, span and load, with a simple rule of thumb.
Why shelves sag
A loaded shelf bends like a beam. Too much bend and books slide, joints crack and the piece looks broken. The good news: the math is simple and repeatable.
The deflection formula
For a shelf of length L, width b, thickness h, carrying a total load W (N = kg × 9.81):
Distributed load: deflection = 5·W·L³ / (384·E·I)
Concentrated load: deflection = W·L³ / (48·E·I)
with I = b·h³/12 (moment of inertia) and E = modulus of elasticity (N/mm²).
Acceptable limits
| Ratio | Use |
|---|---|
| L/180 | Heavy storage (books, tools) — maximum acceptable |
| L/240 | Standard furniture shelf |
| L/360 | Brittle panels (glass, plaster) |
A 1200 mm shelf at L/240 must bend less than 5 mm.
The cubic-thickness rule
Because I = b·h³/12, doubling the thickness makes a shelf 8× stiffer. Adding 3–6 mm of thickness fixes most sagging shelves without changing anything else.
Rule of thumb
For a moderately loaded solid-wood shelf, maximum span ≈ thickness × 33 (18 mm shelf ≈ 600 mm, 25 mm ≈ 800 mm). Verify with the shelf sag calculator for your real load.
Practical tips
- Support long shelves in the middle to halve the span and cut deflection by ~8×.
- Oak and beech are stiffer than pine or MDF at equal thickness.
- A thin edge strip or apron turns a flat shelf into a stiffer channel.
