Why waste happens
No panel cuts perfectly. Kerf, defects, grain direction and layout constraints all create offcuts.
Typical waste rates
- Straight rectangular parts: 5–10%
- Diagonal flooring or complex layouts: 10–15%
- Curved or highly grained work: 15%+
Formula
Required material = usable area / (1 − waste rate)
Waste % = (1 − used / purchased) × 100
Practical tips
- Order extra for repairs and mistakes — one sheet more is cheap insurance.
- Keep offcuts above 300 mm; they become the next project's free wood.
- Batch identical cuts to reduce setup errors.
