Why it matters
Lumber is sold by volume. Knowing how to convert board dimensions into cubic meters (or board feet) lets you compare quotes, order the right amount and estimate cost.
The formula
For a rectangular board:
Volume (m³) = length (m) × width (m) × thickness (m)
For multiple identical boards, multiply by the quantity.
Board feet
In North America lumber is quoted in board feet:
Board feet = (length in ft × width in in × thickness in in) / 12
One cubic meter equals roughly 423.77 board feet.
Worked example
A board of 2 m × 0.2 m × 0.05 m:
Volume = 2 × 0.2 × 0.05 = 0.02 m³
Practical tips
- Sellers quote nominal sizes; confirm the actual finished dimensions.
- Green wood weighs more than kiln-dried: ask about moisture content.
- Always convert everything to one unit before comparing.
Use the wood volume calculator to do this instantly.
