Why waste happens

No panel cuts perfectly. Kerf, defects, grain direction and layout constraints all create offcuts.

Typical waste rates

  • Straight rectangular parts: 5–10%
  • Diagonal flooring or complex layouts: 10–15%
  • Curved or highly grained work: 15%+

Formula

Required material = usable area / (1 − waste rate)
Waste % = (1 − used / purchased) × 100

Practical tips

  • Order extra for repairs and mistakes — one sheet more is cheap insurance.
  • Keep offcuts above 300 mm; they become the next project's free wood.
  • Batch identical cuts to reduce setup errors.

Estimate waste automatically with the wood cutting calculator or wood waste planner.
